Philip Catherine & Nicola Andrioli at Guitar Festival Oberhausen
Scharpach Guitars have invited Philip Catherine (guitar) and Nicola Andrioli (piano) to play at the Jazz Club Gdanska in Oberhausen during the Guitar Festival Oberhausen. And we were very pleased that the concert was sold-out.
Philip played the Scharpach Vienna Opus at the concert. This acoustic archtop with humbucker accommodates Philips style of guitar playing very well. He is an old style jazzplayer; playing with a strong attack, great power and control in both hands. His right hand plays a heavy plectrum that is able to create many incredible colours and his left hand makes the guitar sing at all times. This might be responsible for the recognisable and famous Catherine sound that is loved by many friends all over the world and great musicians like f.e. Chet Baker who himself also had an incredible sound.
International critics state that Philip Catherine is without no doubt one of the best European Jazz Guitarists.
Philip performed this concert together with the talented piano player and composer Nicola Andrioli. They played some of Philip Catherine’s own compositions, like one of my favourites the beautiful tune “Gilles et Mirona” and pieces written by Nicola Andrioli. But also some tunes from his latest album called: “Philip Catherine plays Cole Porter”.. Listening to Philip is listening to a great storyteller whose phrases seem to come easy and indeed Philip invites you to join his journey into the wonderful world of music. Jazzy themes, chanson styled melodies and his own style of swing it all passes by.
This concert was a true highlight for the Guitars Festival Oberhausen.
